New Look 6529 – The Black Tunic

I’m still mourning the loss of Hancock Fabrics.  In all of my years, I have never lived in a place where I don’t have at least one fabric store in town and I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to that.  With the nearest fabric store being at least a half hour away, as we’re traveling around for various band competitions or basketball tournaments, I drop into any JoAnn’s that I see to catch pattern sales or pick up notions.  On one such trip, I saw a bin full of loudly patterned leggings.  I’d been planning to make myself a few pairs but at $8 I figured why not.

Because the leggings are so busy I knew I’d need a solid, tunic length top to pair with it.    Thankfully, I always have black ponte knit on hand as I always order lengths of it when Fabric Mart has it on sale at different points throughout the year.   Black is notoriously hard to photograph but I gave it a shot.

Pattern Review:

Pattern Description: Women’s Knit Tunics and Leggings

Pattern Sizing: XS-S-M-L-XL

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow? I go with yes, I the hood comes together at the front and crosses over in a V shape. I always have trouble sewing those as instructed and have to hand baste them in and then machine stitch no matter what the instructions say so I’m guessing that’s just user error rather than a problem with the instructions.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the length of the tunic in the pattern, makes it just perfect to wear with leggings and be covered. I especially like the uneven hem, making the tunic longer in the back to give excellent coverage in the back but a little interest to the hemline.

Fabric Used: I used a ponte knit from Fabric Mart Fabrics that I had in my stash. I always buy a bunch of this in black when they have it on sale for my stash.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: No alterations or design changes. I don’t typically sew a lot of New Look patterns because I don’t find them particularly plus-size or busty-girl friendly but I was able to sew this puppy right out of the envelope. I noticed another reviewer stated that the front pocket was upside down and it is a different shape than most similar type pockets but after looking at the line drawings, the diagrams on the instructions and the envelope picture, I figured I’d just place it as instructed.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I definitely plan to sew this again and I will also sew it as a set with leggings.  Check out Anita’s great combo Here

Conclusion:  This is a great pattern for casual wear with lots of options. It works up quickly (f you don’t keep stopping for days at a time). It’s beginner friendly and I will definitely be sewing it again.
