Simplicity 8124 – The Anniversary Dress

I loved this pattern when it first came out.  It was perfect because it’s so cute and simple, would allow me to try out my new strapless bra and it’s from one of my most favorite designers.

I made the dress two years ago!  It was one of those end of season makes that by the time that I finished it, the weather was starting to change and it was never quite hot enough.  Also, as a busty girl, wearing off the shoulder styles is fairly new to me so whenever I do, I feel super exposed so it literally needs to be 90 degrees and above.  When I tell you this dress has been around.  I have packed it for every trip and get away over the past two years waiting for the right opportunity to wear it yet it always comes back unworn.   When this Summer rolled around, I was determined to wear it and I thought our anniversary dinner was a perfect time.

We decided to take the family to one of our favorite local family mexican restaurants.  Just as the entree’s were coming out, the server dropped the plates on the table and knocked over an entire strawberry Jarritos (my absolute favorite one) over on me.  DO YOU SEE THE COLOR OF MY DRESS?!  Needless to say dinner was cut short and all I could think about was how I would get the red out of my fabric.  I didn’t let it ruin my night but it was not fun being wet and sticky on the ride home.  Even though it was a bummer that I’d waited two years to wear this dress and on the first go round it got soiled and possibly ruined, the good news is that because the fabric is still available I can just make it again if I really want to.

Pattern Review:

Pattern Description: Misses’ peasant style mini dress, and top by Cynthia Rowley have elastic neckline and sleeve band; romper has additional elastic waist for a cool effortless look. This Cynthia Rowley pattern is Easy-to-Sew.

Pattern Sizing: A (XS-S-M-L-XL)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Not exactly but very close.

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were super easy to follow. This dress was a super quick sew.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?  The pattern is really short but I expected that because most Cynthia Rowley patterns are and you can certainly see that on the model on the pattern envelope, I mean it’s barely covering her lady bits. Once stiff wind and she’s exposed.

Fabric Used: I used a Michael Miller cotton with metallic polka dots. I liked this fabric so much, I also bought it in black with gold polka dots.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:  I added four inches to the hem, even with that, I just did a regular 1 1/2 inch hem to get the extra length although I do love the deep 4-inch hem called for in the pattern instructions. I also added inseam side pockets which I LOVE and I added a fabric self-belt to be able to manage some of the volume.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?  I would definitely sew this again, especially since I ended up styling it over jeans and I really liked the look. I also like the romper version which I might also sew up.

Conclusion:  This is a great, versatile pattern. An easy make, quick sew and great for beginners.

When I made this I intended to wear it by itself as a dress and I have the cutest lace up flat sandals to wear with it but when I tried it on for hubs, he liked these and I’d been dying to wear these shoes with jeans so it was a win.  I have shied away from the jeans with a dress idea because it takes me back to my childhood where that was the only way I was allowed to wear a dress but since it was a little cooler than I would have liked and I was reminded of this Pic I’d seen recently on Instagram, I decided to go ahead and give it a try and I LOVED it! so don’t be surprised if you see this look from me again in the future.

  1. Good for you for the anniversary and making the dress, but too bad about having to wear the drink home–that’s really disappointing. I hope you don’t have to make a new dress every time you want to wear it!
